ABOUT THE ARTIST
LUKA DEBEVEC MAYER was born to Slovenian parents in Buenos Aires. He studied philosophy at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina and vocal performance at the Higher Institute of Art of the Teatro Colón.
At the age of 27, he made his debut at the renowned Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.
As a member of the opera ensemble Juventus Lyrica in Buenos Aires, he has performed in operas such as Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, Orfeo ed Euridice, L’enfant et les sortilèges, Amahl and the Night Visitors, and The Tales of Hoffmann.
The Argentine Music Critics Association awarded him the prize for Best Argentine Singer for the years 2004 and 2009, and selected him again in 2017 and 2019.
His art song repertoire includes song cycles by Schubert, Schumann, Mahler, Strauss, Berlioz, Fauré, Ibert, Duparc, and Guastavino, among others.
As a soloist, he has also participated in performances of major vocal-instrumental works (Bach’s cantatas, passions, and Mass in B minor, Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s The Creation and Stabat Mater, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Verdi’s Requiem, etc.).
He toured with the famous Anna Netrebko in the opera Iolanta, performing in the most prestigious cities and concert halls across Europe, and recorded a CD for the Deutsche Gramophon label.
Sacred music holds a special place in his repertoire, which is why he frequently includes sacred pieces in his performances (especially in churches throughout Slovenia). The Družina publishing house released a CD of selected spiritual songs titled “V živi spomin” (“In Living Memory”).
